2026 DC Chapter Writing Scholarship Winners

1st Place Winner ($2000) is Declan Pranoto from Chantilly High School

His winning composition was titled "The Quiet You Left Behind” and will be submitted to the National Society of Arts and Letters for a chance to win a portion of $10,000 in scholarships to be announced the third week in April.

2nd Place Winner ($1500) is Natalia Ponciano, from Justice High School in Falls Church

Her winning composition was titled "Under the Willow Tree”.

3rd Place Winner ($1000) is Mia Garz from West Springfield High School

Her winning composition was titled "The Color Red”


Competition Chair: Leslie Ann Gerardo

Judges: Rebecca (Beka) Wueste and Christina McBride

Chair Leslie Ann Gerardo is a retired lawyer who served for over 25 years at the U.S. Department of Justice, with a lifelong interest in creative writing. Rebecca (Beka) Wueste is an award winning artist and illustrator, and author of "The Unsent Letters of Lucy Prior," her debut novel, as well as numerous short stories and plays.  Christina McBride is an editor, writer, and educator, and a 2020 winner of the Newton-Blanchard Prize in creative writing at the College of William and Mary.
