2010 NATIONAL CAREER AWARD COMPETITION

The Frank and Hilda W. Reinhart Memorial Short Story Competition

 

 

2010 Washington DC Chapter Literature Chair

Seven writers, ages 20 to 32, received recognition in The Frank and Hilda W. Reinhart Short Story Competition sponsored by NSAL’s local Washington DC Chapter during their May meeting at the Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria, Virginia.

 

David Frank Scrivner, a resident of Capitol Hill, DC received the First Place Award of $4000 and represented the Washington region in the national competition held in Clearwater, Florida.  Tara Ann Laskowski of Burke, VA received the Second Place Award of $2000.  Five entries received an Honorable Mention.

 

Scrivner won first place for his short stories ‘A Short But Thorough Analysis of Bridges in the Modern Age’ and ‘Olive’.  He is a 2004 graduate of St. Mary's College in MD and in 2008 received an M.A. in Literature from American University where he was honored with the English Department's award for Outstanding Academic Achievement.  He currently lives in Capitol Hill and teaches reading and writing in DC and Northern Virginia.

 
Laskowski graduated from Susquehanna University in 2000 and received an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from George Mason University in 2005.  She was the 2009 Kathy Fish Fellow and writer-in-residence at SmokeLong Quarterly.  She currently works in George Mason University's Office of Media and Public Relations.


The Honorable Mention winners represent a cross section of schools and locales in the Washington region.  Christina Capatides, of Washington, DC, graduated from Georgetown University in 2009.  Ann Elise Keller, of Lutherville, MD, will graduate from Washington College, Chestertown, MD in 2010.  Lindsay Moore, of Washington, DC, is a 1999 graduate of Emory University.  Daniel Morris, of St. Mary's City, MD, will graduate from St. Mary's College in 2010.  Jared Watkins, of Washington, DC and Farmington, NM, will graduate from Georgetown University in 2011.

 

Judges of the competition were comprised of a distinguished panel of nationally known writers, including Charles Jensen, director of The Writer's Center, Bethesda, MD; Shelley Kirilenko, Ph.D., Bethesda, MD author of fiction and non-fiction works; Michelle Latiolais; professor of English at the University of California at Irvine; and Brad Leithauser, author of the novel The Art Student's War (2009) and currently serving on the Writing Seminars faculty of Johns Hopkins University.
