The National Society of Arts and Letters Will Hold Its Seventh Annual Award for Excellence in the Arts In Collaboration with The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Education Department Monday, April 19, 2010 at the Terrace Theater
Monday afternoon in a rehearsal room at St. Albans School, two students met again for the first time in a year to rehearse for a performance at the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater. Did they remember one another? Not really. But as two of thirty-two Award for Excellence in the Arts winners from last years award ceremony, they auditioned for a chance to return to the Kennedy Center. And they won. This time, instead of receiving an award and recognition, they would perform for the newest class of award recipients.
The two students are Lyon Stewart, a tenor from St. Albans, and Clifton Williams, a pianist and Valedictorian of his class from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. They already have quite a resume. Stewart was a soloist in the Hurricane Katrina Memorial Service at Washington National Cathedral in 2005 and was a boy treble soloist in Handels Messiah and Bernsteins Chichester Psalms with the Washington Chorus and Cantate Chamber Singers. Williams has recently given a series of concerts in Vienna, Austria and Paris, France for the U.S. Ambassador to Vienna and U.S. Ambassador to UNESCO. He is slated to perform the hymn It is Well With My Soul and then remain on stage to accompany Stewart in Maria from West Side Story.
Also on tap for the evening is Vieuxtemps Violin Concerto No. 4 by West Potomac High Schools Sarah Chaney. In addition, the audience will hear a performance of Sakura: Theme and Variations by a classical guitar trio which includes previous Award for Excellence winners Kate Oliphant of Freedom High School and Andrew Holcomb of Heritage High School and is rounded out by their third colleague, Young Jun Lim, also from Freedom High School.
Chaneys resume includes the first violin chair in the Washington Metropolitan Youth Orchestra from 2007 to 2009, and she has also performed with the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic. Classical guitarist Oliphants accolades include placing first in the Loudoun County Public Schools Aguado Club Guitar Competition, while Holcomb performed at the Yale Guitar Extravaganza in both 2006 and 2009.
The keynote speaker for the evening will be the Kennedy Centers Director, Special Programming, Robert C. Pullen. Julliard-trained Pullens advocacy for young artists in the area is becoming legendary. Aside from producing the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor television specials every year since 2005, Pullen teaches musical theater master classes at universities across the country.
This is the seventh year that the National Society of Arts and Letters will sponsor such an event. Held in conjunction with the Education Department of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, this program allows Washington area public, charter, and private high schools a chance to honor high school juniors for their accomplishments in the arts by nominating one Award for Excellence in the Arts winner and up to three Certificate of Merit recipients. Students are recognized in any of six disciplines showcased by NSAL: art, dance, drama, literature, music, and musical theater. The decision to recognize high school juniors was made so that recipients could include the NSAL Award for Excellence and Certificate of Merit distinction on their college applications.
The event is special for all participants. Each year, the students are excited, the parents are proud, the teachers are happy, and there is overall joy in the air. The talent and accomplishments of the recognized students are an inspiration to all at NSAL.
The National Society of Arts and Letters is a non-profit, volunteer organization of men and women who are professionally engaged in the visual, literary, and performing arts. Its mission is to support the development of talented young Americans in the fields of art, dance, drama, literature, music, and musical theater. ###
